The Amuzu (“Amuse you) is a family owned theatre located two blocks up from the waterfront of the Cape Fear River at 111 North Howe Street.in Southport, NC. This local landmark operated as a movie theater from 1917-1980.
Built in 1918 by a former two term Mayor of Southport as well as a builder and brick mason, Price Furpless, the Amuzu Theatre has been a venue for entertainment for residents and visitors of the area for almost a century.
Originally built to feature silent films in the era of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, it was closed as a movie theater in 1980.The last movie to run was an edited version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, shown in October of 1980.
The Azumu was sitting dark in 2003, but regained new life as it reopened as live theater.
It has been seen in such films as “Crimes of the Heart” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” .
It is now a popular venue for concerts and live theater. Since 2010 a core group of dedicated and talented volunteers; including a light person, sound person and troupe of actors and singers have been performing” Broadway on Howe Street” and the “Old Time Rock and Roll” slated each summer.
